2009/2010 SOUTH AFRICAN SURVEY

Key findings of living condition indicators reported in the 2009/2010 South African Survey regarding the Tokologo Local Municipality include the following;

  • Total number of households are estimated at 7 388.
  • The types of housing in the district comprise of 71.8 % formal housing, 26.4 % informal dwellings and 1.3 % traditional dwellings.
  • 94.4 % of households have access to piped water.
  • 50.8 % of households still use the bucket system.
  • 83.4 % of households have access to electricity.

2007 COMMUNITY SURVEY, STATISTICS SOUTH AFRICA

Key findings of the 2007 Community Survey of Statistics South Africa regarding Tokologo include the following;

  • 70.5 % of the main dwellings of households comprised of a house or a brick structure on a separate stand or yard.
  • The percentage of traditional dwellings made of traditional materials decreased from 4.1 % (Census 2001) to 1.3 %.
  • The percentage of households comprising of a house/flat in a backyard remained at 2.2 %. Informal dwellings in an informal settlement increased from 15.6 % (Census 2001) to 24.2 %.
  • 52.9 % of households have access to piped water inside the dwelling which is a significant increase from the 19 % indicated in the 2001 Census. A further 33.8 % of households have access to piped water inside the yard. The percentage of households with access to water outside the yard decreased from 16.1 % (2001 Census) to 3.7 %.
  • 19 % of households have access to flush toilets connected to sewerage system which increased from 13.6 % in the 2001 Census. 23.6 % of households have access to chemical toilets. The percentage of households using the bucket system decreased from 46.5 % in the 2001 Census to 34 %.
  • The percentage of households using electricity for cooking increased from 41.8 % (Census 2001) to 69.4 % whilst 83.4 % of households use electricity for lighting. 50.7 % of households also used electricity for heating. 29.1 % and 16.5 % of households still use wood and coal respectively for heating purposes.
  • 48.1 % of households have access to refuse removal by the municipality at least once a week which increased from 46.3 % in the 2001 Census. 22.1 % of households do not have access to refuse disposal.
